My cat loves to play fetch.  I have some sheepskin mouse toys that he absolutely loves.  They are soft and easily bitten down on so they make a perfect object to fetch.  I’m worried because next year I will be living in a different apt. so the long hallway that makes fetch possible will no longer exist.  We’ll have to adapt I suppose.  Anyone else have a cat that likes to play fetch?

Thats so cute. i wish my cats would fetch. I’m teaching them to walk on a leash though so they can come with the dogs and me when we go for walks.

Any strategy you used to teach your cat fetch, or is it something he picked up on his own?

He really started doing it on his own.  I threw the mouse, he thought that was great, and then brought it back for more.
I will tell you that it’s not always a great trick.  Sometimes he needs a lot more fetch than I can give!

My cat loves to fetch too.  Her favorite fetching toy, oddly enough, are these orange ear plugs you can get from Wal-mart.  I used to wear them to help me sleep when I had housemates.  Like your cat, she also just started doing it on her own.  I used to wake up in the morning surrounded by stuff she had brought me in the middle of the night to throw for her.

Haha, I wake up to toys, too.  Or, as soon as I’m awake, he’ll pounce on top of me and drop the mouse right there so I can throw it.

I have a kitten that loves to play fetch too! He has even discovered a way to make us feel terrible about leaving him home alone…when we are walking out the door, he stands there with his soft ball hanging out of his mouth and a sad look on his face.  We live in a small apartment too and to keep the game fun, instead of tossing the ball down the short hallway, I’ll bounce it off the floor so he can jump in the air to catch it.  I also bought a couple of those crinkle-tunnels, tucked one end into the other end (don’t tie them together because the cat can stick his head through it and choke) and I’ll throw the ball so he has to run through the tunnel.  He loves doing that.

Love your kitty in the tunnel!! : D My cats go nuts for crinkly shopping bags, paper or plastic, but have yet to show any interest in any of the crinkly sacs, tunnels and beds I’ve ever bought them. I just got them a new one a couple of days ago, it’s a crinkle tunnel in the shape of Santa’s pants!! Absolutely hysterical! Unfortunately I find them much more amusing than my cats do. *sigh* Oh well, back to the store it goes.

My finicky, lazy beasts get bored with balls and mice within the first minute or two of playing with them, so the whole “fetch” concept is kinda lost on them. : ( But they sure love those little laser lights! Not that the little red dots did anything for getting them interested in santa’s pants…  I was doing the dishes earlier tonight and they were getting all excited when a few soap bubbles made a break for it and floated around the room, so I think I’ll have to give those little catnip bubble wands a try next.

Where did you find santa’s pants tunnel??  That sounds fun!  My two black and whites were very lazy cats too, even as kittens.  When I played string with them, they would play as long as they didn’t have to stand up.  They would roll over on their backs and bat at it as long as it was within paw-reach.  If they had to get up, forget it!

Neko, I found the santa pants tunnel in Big Lots for $8. It was funny and a good $ so I gave it a shot, though I knew before I even left the store that it was probably coming right back. *sigh* I can’t find any pet items on biglots.com, and I’m not coming up with anything like it online, so you’ll have to go out to get it. I returned it already or I’d send it to you! : (

Try your local Big Lots. If you haven’t heard of them, it’s kinda between a dollar store and a Marshalls/Ross/TJMaxx. It’s got a little food, very little in the way of clothes, but it’s mostly household items like toys, tools, kitchenware, decor, garden stuff, etc. Since it’s all overstock/closeout stuff their inventory never exactly the same, so it’s a bit like hitting the flea markets or going garage sale-ing: you have to dig thru the clutter to find the real gems. But I find they can be a good place to look for pet toys, though half the time you’ll come up empty. Quite a few times I’ve found some toys there that I saw in Petco and on Foster’s & Smith for half of what they were asking. Not that the cats appreciate a good bargain hunt like I do! Most of the time they’d rather play with the plastic bag the toy came in! : P

Anyhoos, as for what to look for in the store: the santa pants look just like a standard kitty crinkle tunnel except for the decorations and split end. Mine was black with red and white trim around the cuffs and a fuzzy green belt, but it looked like there were other colour combinations up on the overstock shelves. Apparently my version was “after” coming down the chimney! : P It didn’t come in a box, but was loose with a hang tag attached to one endsot you could still expand or collapse it to check it out. I almost kept it to use as holiday decorations, it would be hysterical sticking out the bottom of a chimney!! (non-functioning, of course!) But I no one I know down here has any chimneys, so back to the store it went!

My big guy is still lazy like that with chasing strings and things, though his sister will give it the old college try for a little while longer. But he’s the one who’s obsessed with stray floating bubbles, so I’ll have to let you know how the catnip-laced ones work out!

Picked up a pack of mini bubble party favours shaped like mini ornaments on the after christmas clearance. (still had to add dishwashing liquid to the bubble broth though, but that’s what you get for being cheap!) Both cats are fascinated with the bubbles, but don’t quite know what to do with them. I still have to go out and get them the catnip-laced variety. Will let you know how that works out! They both are enjoying the rest of the cat-toy gift haul, big guy is even enraptured playing with his lastest mouse on a string thing. Or as I like to call it, “fishing for kitties” : P

Neko, did you ever find the santa pants?

I too have taught my cat to play fetch. She especially loves the sparkle balls from the craft store. Pom Poms I believe they are called. They have all sizes and colors, light weight, and can be thumped in any small space. They are about $2.00 for 10 or so. Occasionally, you see one or two in the cat toy multi-packs, in the cat section at the pet store. I just found them at the craft store in variety and besides my cat is not fond of the other toys in the pack at the pet store. My cat can catch in mid air and even does flips off the couch. We just got a new kitten so I am currently trying to teach him to fetch too. He is a natural hunter so we are having fun teaching him. We are just having trouble teaching him to bring the ball back. He catches it and runs with the prize. Needless to say, the pom poms are all over the house, but the cats are not bored! smile

Hahaha! Cool…I wish my cat could play fetch too..Too bad she’s even too lazy to walk around. Seems like she’s overweight for her size…

That’s nice. My cat is pretty passive. I wish it would learn to play more like what yours is doing. Whatever i do, my cat just wants to eat and sleep.
