As I was refilling my cats’ litter boxes the other day, a small green nylon-ish tube dropped out of the bag. I kept wondering what it was until I noticed on the front of the bag a little sticker that said “Free Cat Toy Inside.”

As much as I love feline pine, I must say I am shocked at the sheer irresponsibility of this item. I showed it to my mom who worked in a vet clinic for some time and she came to the same conclusion that I did: this is not a toy, this is dangerous. It even says right on the label “May cause injury if frayed or damaged.”

The material this thing is made out of could very easily become lodged in a cat’s throat, puncture the stomach lining, or become lodged in the intestines, which could if not caught quickly result in peritonitis or septicemia. Even intact, the “toy” is dangerous, the spaces in the material are large enough for a cat to get their teeth or claws stuck in, again resulting in injury.
I’ve taken it to my local vet’s office to show to him and he also agreed that this object is not something that should be given to a cat, and he’s kept the one I brought to him to show to his other patients and staff to warn them not to give it to their cats.

Please, if you find this in your bag of litter DO NOT let your cat play with it!!

For the folks at Feline Pine, I’d suggest you remove this item from your product quickly before some cat gets hurt and you get stuck with the bill. Whoever advised your board that this object was safe for cats should be handed a pink slip and shown out the door as they clearly have no idea what they’re doing.

Hi,

Early in 2009, we added the toy to all FP Original packages for about two months.  While we certainly respect the professional opinions of the vets you spoke to, we did verify that the toy itself was sold in the US for several years with no issues, and did seek professional input beforehand.  But due to feedback like yours, we decided that even the SLIGHTEST chance of risk and/or your loss of confidence in our dedication to the health of cats is in no way acceptable.  Therefore, the toy has been completely discontinued.  Thanks again for your feedback on this issue.

My kitties were completely uninterested in the toy.  They looked at me like, “What am I supposed to do with this thing?”  I hadn’t thought about the possible choking hazard, so I’m glad they didn’t like it.
