I am an adult female with a lot of allergies! Cat’s being one of them, I would not let that stand in the way of adding a kitten to my family. So with my theory that I am not allergic to tuxedo cats i adopted one and as soon as he was old enough started bathing him. He is shampooed and cleaned once a week and a lot of pet owners think I am doing something wrong. I discussed the matter with my vet who said there was absolutely no harm in it so I was wondering if I am the only weirdo out there or if other people bathe their cats as well. Please let me know what you think, please only positive comments. Also if you know if there is any information on short hair tuxedo cats being better for people with allergies.

Dear Amanda: There are other people I know who bathe their cats. Never consider yourself wierd for doing something which is positive and beneficial. Studies have shown that products claiming to reduce pet allergins are less effective than a weekly bath for both cats and dogs. Mexican Chihuahuas are hairless dogs and are great for people who have allergies. I recently read of hairless Sphynx cats. Short hair pets are always better for people with alergies.

I bathed my first cat a couple times, but haven’t bathed any since then (at the moment we have six cats)... they keep themselves very clean. We had one who used to get into our vent system; the first few times she came out pretty dusty, but she eventually cleaned herself off. She’s our only long-haired cat, and of course she’s the only one who insists on going outside (to the point of clawing the back door if we don’t let her go). She has good sense, so we let her go, but she does get dusty out there. So we have thought about bathing her, but haven’t.

Anyway, I vote no on bathing cats..
