I need help/advice.  We installed all new laminate flooring on our main floor where the 2 cats roam, and use 2 litter boxes with the Feline Pine pellets.  We started using the FP litter since remodeling because we did not want the mess of the clumping clay litter.  However…..despite mopping my floors with different recommended products…our new floor has a “tacky” waxy feeling to it, and sticky feel and sound when we walk on it in our tennies. I can’t help think that the pine has some resin that has now affected the feel of our once new “clean” floors!  I am very frustrated…please help!

I am not sure how your floors could have become “tacky”.  I highly doubt it is from the Feline Pine as the pine sawdust is kiln-dried at 215 degrees, and then it is pelletized at 10,000 foot pounds of pressure.  We use both of these messures to ensure that all of the natural oils are removed because the natural oils of pine can sometimes have an effect on cats, which we would never want to have happen.  Could it possibly be the wax that was used on the floors?  I wish I could help more, but I am not sure how the floor could have become “tacky”.

Tacky floors from FP? I don’t really think so, you might get a bit dusty by the litterbox maybe, but not not sticky or tacky. I’ve been usinf FP for years and never had any problems with tackiness. It sounds more like a coating that was either on the laminate to begin with (protective coating for installation maybe?) or residue from one of your cleaners. Or it could be a reaction from using one product directly over another one in your search for the best cleaner, or just stuff you’re tracking in on your sneakers.

Does it only feel tacky when you use your sneakers? I had some shoes that used to stick and squeak on the floors at work, so I stopped wearing them there. My other shoes were just fine, so I assumed it was just from whatever the soles were made of. If it’s only specific shoes that have the problem, it could also be coming from something you’re walking in before you go inside (soaps, yard chemicals, grease from restaurant floors, etc).

If you’ve ruled out the footwear, I’d check to see if the laminate was already tacky when you got it. You should have a few scrap pieces laying around, lay them down and try walking on them with your tennies and see if you get the same sticky noises and tackiness. If they’re just as tacky as the floors are, then either it’s a problem with the laminate, or it could be some kind of protective coating that your installers forgot to take off. Call your manufacturer’s cust service number and ask tell them your problems. If it’s not a protective coating, you should have some kind of warranty coverage to fix the problem.

If the untouched pieces are fine, then it’s some kind of product residue. Call the cust serv number and tell them what’s going on and they should tell you the best way you can strip off the residues without harming your new floors. Then I’d test any new products you want to try on the scrap pieces first so you don’t have the same problems all over again.

Hope it’s a quick and simple fix. Welcome to the forum and to Feline Pine and congratulations on your new floors!!

Its definately not the pine litter.  I clean professionally and what probably happened is an oil based product was followed by a wax based product or something to that effect.  I have used denatured mineral spirits in situations like that with good results but you definately have to check with the installer or manufacturer.  Using water before a wax finish is totally dry will also cause a sticky residue that is difficult to remove.  Laminate wood floors are supposed to be so great but I think they are a pain.
Good Luck!
