Hi Jessica,

Feline Pine is 100% biodegradable, and can be disposed of in your back yard.  Most people use it as mulch around trees and bushes, or compost it.

does it elieviate the urine smell?  or will my cats go to that spot when they go outside?  sorry about all these silly questions but thank you for answering them.

Don’t worry, it’s not a problem at all.  The natural make up of pine neutralizes the ammonia in the cat’s urine, which is why it covers the smell so well.  There will still be a natural instinct for the cat to investigate the used litter outside, but it shouldn’t cause for them to constantly want to go to it.  Also, once the used litter is exposed to the natural outdoor elements, it will reduce any scent that it may have.  You shouldn’t have any problems if you let the cats outside.

FP can certainly be dumped in the yard!

Many years ago, I was having trouble controlling blackberries and other invasive weeds in a section of my yard. Out of complete frustration, I figured that I would bury that section of the yard in used, de-pooped FP. I buried that section of the yard about 2 feet deep in FP.

Still, it took a number of years to fight the weeds into submission.

Over the years the FP naturally composed along with the leaves that came down in the fall.

After the blackberries were beaten into submission, I decided to plant a flower garden.

Imagine my surprise when I turned the soil over. I had wonderful soil of a great texture and the flowers thrived. I still battle the invasive weeds, but the soil is fabulous.

I’ve got another target area where I’ll be dumping the FP.

Now I do have a question: Can FP be used in a vegetable/herb garden? If so, what is the best way to use it in the edibles garden: mulch, composted, both?

I’ve seen some guidlelines that say not to use it in a garden of edibles.

Thanks!

As you have read in other places, we do not recommend putting the used FP in a garden where there will be edibles.  The used FP can still be hazerdous to anything that will be consumed.  But as you have seen, it does work wonders as mulch and for flower gardens.

When I called my county extension office the master gardeners there said it was okay to use de-pooped COMPOSTED pine.  I told them I have a vegetable garden and the man there said it was okay if it was composted. Have I been told this in error?  If so I have a huge compost pile (I have been regularly mixing in the pine) that I will not be able to use in my garden and what a bummer that will be!

After checking with some local nurseries, I have been told that if the used FP is composted, then it will be safe for use in vegetable gardens.  When it is mixed with the other parts of the compost pile, it highly dilutes the used pine and creates a safe compost to be used.  Thanks for helping to double check this.

Whoo-hoo! Great news!! Finally an answer! : D *does happy dance*

Quick question before I go out and set up a FP composter… did they say we had to use a particular method for composting, or is any method fine? Can it be put in any ol’ pile or bin, or does it have to be a hot composter?

I’m asking just about the used FP, not the poo… though it would be lovely to get a definitive answer on that too.

From what they made it sound like, you can put it in any old pile or bin with anything else you are composting.  As for the poo, I know that everyone I have talked too has said that the FP needs to have it removed and thrown away because it can contain certain diseases that are harmful.  I hope this helps, and happy composting!

not to mention certain medications , de-wormers etc. can be concentrated in poop and be very bad for you.
