When we found our kitten, he was about 3 months old (eyes were in the process of going from baby blue to adult color) and I noticed right away that when something goes into his mouth, he will really stuff it in his mouth to the point of triggering the gag reflex.  When we are “arm wrestling” I have to make a conscious effort to keep my fingers curled so they don’t fit in his mouth otherwise I’d end up feeling his tonsils.  I’ve brought this up to our vet and to a couple other cat sites and everyone said that he is probablly just getting overly excited when playing and will eventually learn not to do that.  Four months later, he is still gagging himself.  It as if he has no feeling inside his mouth.  He also bites down harder than normal.  I’ve looked inside his mouth to see if maybe he had some scarring from chewing on an electrical cord or whatever, but it looks fine.  I don’t know anything about his early kittenhood other than he was abandoned at a wayside rest area.

Ouch! I have no idea what to tell you, other than you have apparently adopted the kitty version of deep throat. I’d keep checking with your vets when you go to see them, sometimes you have to be persistent with things that you feel are not quite right. Perhaps Dr Gaspar has some suggestions for you?

I’ll keep asking because he isn’t growing out of this.  I thought that maybe after he gagged himself enough times, he’d figure it out and stop…or that it had to do with the fact that he was teething.  All of his adult teeth are in and he STILL stuffs things in his niouth until he gags.
