Feline pine original or clumping?

Wondering a bit about the 2 products.  Is the clumping litter pellets as well?  And the normal feline pine, do the pellets turn into something sawdust-like?  How would one go about cleaning something like that? I’ve seen the Feline pine litter boxes but my kitties are insane and there is 4 of them…so I have this on-going debate in the back of my mind, of to just buy something they use until i need to change the whole thing or constantly scoop?  They like an enclosed litter pan, which is why I’m not planning on buying the feline pine litter box’s.  I have been interested in the litter boxes where you tip them over and then back right side up and it collects the clumps, but if the clumping feline pine is pellets I’m ot sure it would work, since I’m assuming they’ve designed it for ‘normal’ clumping clay litter.  If it helps anyone who can answer some of my questions as to comparing pellet size I use yesterdays news for my ferrets.

thanks so much!

So far I’ve only used the original FP, that’s the pellet version. My kitties like it and it’s easier to find, so no real need to switch at the moment. I’ve looked at yesterday’s news on the shelves and never saw the pellets up close, but it looks like they’re about the same size. The FP pellets do break down into sawdust once they’ve been hit with liquids, so there’s no clumps to scoop, only the other solids. All you need to do is shake the box a bit after you’re done scooping and the unused pellets rise to the top. The clumping FP starts out with the same sawdusty texture that the original FP breaks down into, but when liquids hit it, it clumps up like any other clumping litter.

I don’t have the sifting litterbox either. It sounds nifty, but it’s certainly not neccessary. I only have two cats, but they’re on the larger side, especially my big man over there *nods head at avvie* So far the sifting box only comes in one size which looks a wee bit too small for my brood. : ( But I’m saving up my pine perks points (redeem like boxtops) for the freebie one so I can take it on a trial run. Either way I doubt it’ll ever be my main box unless they start making them in jumbo size. I’ve been using covered litterboxes with the doorflap taken off so mr. big man over there can poke his head out while he does his business. He likes to pee standing propped up against the wall, and so far I find the covered boxes less tippy. I liked the concept of those rolling litterboxes, but I think they’re still a little too small. I’m not sure how they’d work with the FP pellets, I guess that would depend on the size of the grate it uses. I’d love an automatic litterbox, but they’re too small, I don’t think it would work with the FP, and mr big shot is such a fraidy cat the noise would scare him off in a heartbeat. *sigh* Guess it’s still the old fashioned way for me. Unless I can get that job hired out… Hmmmm…. Instead of a pool boy I need a poo boy!! : P

haha yeah.  Having 4 cats it makes little sense for me to be scooping everyday.. I think I’m to start with the original FP and see how that works and how often I’m going to be cleaning the box, its around once every 5 days with the clay litter.  I’ve thought about using something more like Yesterdays News and never realized FP was pellets!  I’m most defiantly going to be picking up a small bag tomorrow and trying it out, since I just cleaned 2 out of the 3 litter box’s, and put off the 3rd to try it out, in hopes they’ll like it better and it will absorb better and be easier to clean.  I assume everyone scoops the poop out daily, but it may be challenging to get the ‘dust’ part out.  Can never know until I try right?!

I have heard some issues with the clumping litter and blockage in cats that have ingested too much, what’s everyones experience with this?  I’m getting the original regardless of if I eventually want to use the clumping as I have a young kitten and clumping isn’t suggested with kittens under 6 month’s.  Anywho, thanks for the reply!

The note on the bag says to change after ~2 weeks or as needed. So far that seems to be about on par for my usage, which is two oversized cats sharing one jumbo-sized litterbox. You don’t need to remove the sawdust at all, it will settle to the bottom and the unused pellets will hang out on top… especially if you do the little box-shaking maneuver. Just scoop out the other solids and leave the sawdust, it gets tossed out when you toss the whole lot.

The deal with the sifting box is that it has small holes on the bottom to let the sawdust fall thru to the bottom chamber, leaving more of the fresh pellets up on top. That way people don’t toss as many unused pellets when they dump the whole box. My cats are big diggers, so I don’t have that many usused pellets left over at box-changing time, and I don’t even need to do the shaking thing all that often. I guess that depends on how much your kitties like to go looking for new ways to China! I’d still like to try it, but I think the only difference would be making it easier on me, not the cats. I really really wih they made it in a bigger size, or at least had them out in stores where I could evalute it better. *sigh* so In the meantime I’m saving my perks points for one. There’s a thread in here somewhere that goes over what they are and where you find them on the pkg. Just make sure you don’t toss them out!!

As for the clumping questions, maybe Dr Gaspar has some info on that?
