I have 2 cats and have started using scoopable feline pine plus the traditional clay litter I had been using. I don’t want to try a full switch to a new litter as cats normally need to gradually get used to a change. (They really like gravel). I put an inch or 2 of FP on the bottom and add a couple of inches of clay on top of that.

I always flush the solids. When I tried saving them in a tight container lined with a plastic bag the smell was so overwhelming I couldn’t do it. I went back to flushing solids. Now, I scoop just the liquid that solidifies with the feline pine, and that is great. I can store it for a few days in a plastic bag that I just tie closed, and there is no odor problem.

I have heard that solids should not be flushed—for the sake of the oceans and waters. My concern though is also my septic system, as I have my own septic tank. Could the bits of FP that cling to the solids cause a problem? The box does not say whether flushing is alright.

Thanks for any advice.

Has anyone ever gotten a reply to this? I’m really wondering if flushing FP is a bad idea.

Sorry, I don’t use the clumping formula. But it sounds like a pretty good question to me!

Anyone know the answer?

Sorry wasn’t clear. I am using the original pellets also. I just want to flush the “#2 piles” that have some FP on them and am not sure if the FP will cause trouble for my septic system.

Sorry I haven’t been able to get back to you all on this.  Here at Nature’s Earth we don’t recommend flushing the solids because it can do damage to marine life and also it can be harmful to water quality in some areas away from oceans.  With the Feline Pine Original, it is safe for the septic system to flush the solids as there is now clumping ability.  As for the Feline Pine Scoop we do not recommend flushing it because of the clumping ability and it could clog your toilet if it starts to back up, and could also cause problems in the septic tank.  I hope this helps.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Aha! A place to put the poo! : P

I’m assuming you meant “there is NO clumping ability,” not “now” for the FP original. To add this to the new info we just got in the post “can feline pine be dumped in the yard?” http://www.felinepine.com/forums/viewthread/220/) it looks like FP scoop formula users can take any once-liquid clumps and put them into the compost pile with the rest of the used FP, just like those of us on the original pellet formula. Is this right? If it is, then folks who have compost piles and septic systems can now keep the whole lot of it out of the landfill! Whoo-hoo! : )

Yes Charlene, you are right, I meant to say “there is NO clumping ability”.  And you are also correct that the clumps from the Feline Pine Scoop can be used in a compost pile.  They are not recommended to be used by themselves, but in a compost pile they are fine.  Thanks.

Thank you, this is very good to know. I guess I will need to start composting all of it.
